The Big Sky, or Marshes
Dow's works explore the expressive potential of color. This is one of three versions of Big Sky, or Marshes following a trip Dow took to Arizona and California in 1912 and responded with a tiny, but visually expansive, image with a planar landscape stretched beneath an expressive sky. Here, hot hues evoke a desert shimmering with mirages, with a lightly washed tonal layer applied first to subdue dramatic cloud formations.
